Does my BYD use GB/T or CCS2 in the UAE?

Official UAE BYD cars charge on Type 2 + CCS2 with no adapter. Grey China-imports may be GB/T — here's how to tell, and what to buy if they are.

Short answer: An officially-imported UAE BYD (from Al-Futtaim and other GCC dealers) uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, exactly matching UAE public chargers, so it needs no adapter. A China grey-import BYD may use the GB/T standard instead — if so, you need a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC charging. Always check your own car's inlet.

Why there are two kinds of BYD in the UAE

The same BYD model name can carry a different charging port depending on where the car was sold. UAE public chargers (DEWA, Charge AD/ADDC, ADNOC, Tesla Superchargers, mall chargers) all use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. BYD cars built for the GCC market are fitted to match. BYD cars built for the Chinese domestic market use China's national GB/T standard, which is physically different and not interchangeable.

  • Officially-imported (GCC dealer) BYD — e.g. cars bought new through Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility: Type 2 + CCS2, native. No adapter needed.
  • China grey / parallel-import BYD — privately imported China-spec cars, which can include performance and off-road sub-brands such as BYD Fangchengbao ("Leopard"): may be GB/T — verify. Needs a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC.

Model names don't decide the port — origin does. Two cars badged the same can have different inlets. The deciding factor is whether the car was sold through a GCC dealer or imported from China. When in doubt, treat the physical inlet as the source of truth.

How do I physically tell if my BYD is GB/T or Type 2?

You don't need paperwork to find out — look at the charging socket on the car and check where it was bought:

  • Look at the AC inlet shape. Type 2 and GB/T AC inlets both have 7 round pins and look similar at a glance, but the pin layout and outer collar differ and they are not interchangeable. If a UAE charge cable does not seat fully, suspect GB/T.
  • Check the import route. Bought new from an official UAE BYD dealer? Almost certainly Type 2 + CCS2. Imported privately from China, or a model never sold here (e.g. a Fangchengbao)? Suspect GB/T.
  • Look at the DC port below the AC port. A CCS2 car has the two large DC pins directly under the Type 2 socket as one combined inlet. GB/T uses a separate round DC socket on the other side.
  • Ask the importer or check the VIN/spec sheet if you're still unsure before buying any adapter.

Verify your own inlet before buying. GB/T and Type 2 look alike but are not the same connector. Never force a plug. Confirm your car's exact port — by sight and by import origin — before ordering any adapter.

DC fast charging safety for a GB/T BYD

The flagship Type 2-to-GB/T adapter sold for UAE chargers is a passive AC adapter. It lets a GB/T BYD draw AC power (up to 32A / 22kW three-phase) from a Type 2 charger. It does not enable DC fast charging.

A passive plug-shape adapter is AC only. Never use a passive adapter on a DC fast charger. DC charging requires an active, certified (CCC / CE / TÜV) adapter and is not supported on every car. If you have a GB/T BYD and need DC speed, confirm both the car and an active certified adapter support it before plugging in.

If your BYD is a China grey-import with a GB/T inlet, this passive adapter lets it charge AC on any UAE Type 2 charger.

Frequently asked questions

Does my BYD use GB/T or Type 2 in the UAE?

If your BYD was bought new through an official UAE or GCC dealer (such as Al-Futtaim), it uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC and needs no adapter. If it is a China grey-import, it may use GB/T instead, which requires a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC charging. Always verify your own inlet.

Do I need an adapter for an officially-imported UAE BYD?

No. Officially-imported BYD cars sold through GCC dealers come with Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC) ports, which match every UAE public charger including DEWA, Charge AD, ADNOC and Tesla Superchargers. You can plug straight in with no adapter at all.

What about the BYD Leopard or Fangchengbao?

BYD's Fangchengbao sub-brand (often called "Leopard") is sold in China and may arrive in the UAE as a grey import with a GB/T charging port. If so, it needs a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter to charge AC on UAE chargers. Confirm the physical inlet before buying any adapter.

How do I tell GB/T and Type 2 apart on a BYD?

Both AC inlets have seven round pins and look similar, but the pin layout and collar differ and they are not interchangeable. Check import origin too: GCC-dealer cars are Type 2 + CCS2; China grey-imports may be GB/T. If a UAE cable will not seat fully, suspect GB/T.

Can the GB/T to Type 2 adapter DC fast charge my BYD?

No. The GB/T to Type 2 adapter is a passive AC adapter (up to 32A / 22kW). It cannot be used on a DC fast charger. DC charging needs an active, certified adapter and is not supported on every car, so confirm compatibility before attempting it.

Where can I buy a GB/T to Type 2 adapter in the UAE?

EV Destination stocks the GB/T to Type 2 Adapter for 250 AED — a passive AC adapter rated 32A / 22kW three-phase, designed to charge a GB/T car on a UAE Type 2 charger. It is the flagship choice for a China grey-import BYD that uses the GB/T standard.
