Which adapter does my Chinese EV need in the UAE?
Officially imported Chinese EVs use Type 2 and CCS2 and need no adapter. Cars brought directly from China often use GB/T — here's how to tell, and the adapter that lets you charge in the UAE.

Short answer: If your Chinese EV was imported through an official UAE dealer, it uses Type 2 + CCS2 and needs no adapter. If it was brought in directly from China (a grey/parallel import), it most likely has a GB/T port and needs a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter to charge on UAE AC chargers. DC fast charging needs a separate active, certified adapter. Always check your own car's inlet first.
Why this matters in the UAE
UAE public chargers — DEWA Green Charger in Dubai and the ADNOC / E2GO network in Abu Dhabi — use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. There is no GB/T plug on a UAE public charger. So a China-spec car with a GB/T port physically cannot plug in without an adapter, while a GCC-spec car plugs straight in.
Does your car use GB/T or Type 2?
The same model can ship with different ports depending on where it was imported from. Use this as a guide, then confirm against your actual inlet.
| Car | Official UAE import | China grey-import | Adapter you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD (Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, Han, Tang) | Type 2 + CCS2 — none | some use GB/T verify | Type 2 → GB/T AC |
| Chery / iCar 03 | verify | likely GB/T verify | Type 2 → GB/T AC |
| Jetour (EV / PHEV) | verify | likely GB/T verify | Type 2 → GB/T AC |
| ROX 01 | verify | likely GB/T verify | Type 2 → GB/T AC |
| VW ID.4 / ID.6 "Crozz" (China-built) | EU-spec: Type 2 + CCS2 | GB/T | Type 2 → GB/T AC |
Check your own car first. A port that looks like Type 2 may actually be GB/T (they look similar but are not compatible). Before buying any adapter, look at your charging inlet — or send a photo to EV Destination and we'll confirm the right part.
Charging a GB/T car in the UAE — what works
- AC charging (home & public Type 2): a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter works safely. Speed depends on your car's onboard charger and the point — typically up to 7 kW single-phase or 22 kW three-phase.
- DC fast charging (CCS2): only possible with a dedicated active, certified CCS2-to-GB/T adapter, and not every model is supported. A passive plug-shape adapter will not work and is unsafe.
- Home charging: many grey-import owners charge mostly at home with a GB/T-friendly setup — see our home & portable charger guide.
Never use a passive plug-shape adapter on a DC fast charger. A passive GB/T-to-CCS2 "DC" adapter cannot work safely — the car and charger speak different languages on the DC pins. For DC you need a genuine active adapter with safety certification (CCC / CE / TÜV). When in doubt, charge on AC.

Frequently asked questions
Do all Chinese EVs in the UAE need a charging adapter?
No. Chinese EVs imported through official UAE dealers are built to GCC spec with Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC) ports, so they charge on UAE public and home chargers with no adapter. Only cars imported directly from the Chinese market, which use a GB/T port, need an adapter.
Does my BYD use GB/T or Type 2 in the UAE?
An officially-imported UAE BYD uses Type 2 and CCS2 — no adapter needed. Some China-market BYD models (and grey imports such as the BYD/Fangchengbao 'Leopard') use GB/T and need a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC charging. Always check the actual inlet on your car.
What adapter do I need to charge a China-import EV at a UAE public charger?
For AC charging at Type 2 points you need a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter (for example EV Destination's GB/T to Type 2, 32 A / 22 kW). DC fast charging from a CCS2 charger requires a separate active, certified adapter and is not supported on every car.
Can I fast-charge my Chinese EV with a cheap adapter?
No. A simple passive adapter only works for AC. DC fast charging needs a proper active, certified adapter — and a passive plug-shape 'DC' adapter is unsafe. For reliable fast charging, confirm your car supports an active DC adapter or use AC charging.
How do I know if my car has a GB/T port?
Look at the charging inlet. GB/T looks similar to a Type 2 plug but the pin layout is different and they are not interchangeable. If you are unsure, send a photo of your charging port to EV Destination on WhatsApp and we'll confirm the correct adapter.
