Home & portable chargers for Chinese (GB/T) EVs in the UAE
If your grey-import Chinese EV uses a GB/T inlet, home and portable AC charging is usually the easiest, safest day-to-day option in the UAE. Here is how to choose the charger and adapter.

Short answer: For a Chinese (GB/T) EV in Dubai, the best everyday setup is a home or portable AC charger feeding a passive GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter (250 AED). A 7 kW single-phase or 22 kW three-phase unit covers overnight charging; public DC fast charging needs a separate active, certified adapter and is not guaranteed on every car.
Why do GB/T owners charge at home in the UAE?
UAE public chargers use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. A GB/T car cannot plug into either directly. For AC, a simple passive GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter solves it. For public DC fast charging, you would need an active, certified DC adapter, which is not supported on every car. Because home AC charging is cheaper, predictable and only needs the inexpensive AC adapter, most GB/T owners default to charging overnight at home.
Officially imported cars are different. GCC-dealer EVs (BYD, Hyundai, Kia, GCC Tesla and similar) already use Type 2 + CCS2 and need no adapter. This guide is for grey-import, China-spec GB/T vehicles. Always physically check your own inlet first.
7 kW or 22 kW? Single-phase vs three-phase
Charging speed at home depends on the charger power and on how many phases your supply and car support. A 7 kW single-phase wallbox is the common, affordable choice and fully recharges most EVs overnight. A 22 kW three-phase unit is faster, but only delivers full speed if your home has a three-phase connection and your car's onboard charger accepts three-phase AC. Many EVs cap onboard AC at 7–11 kW, so a 22 kW charger may not run at its rated speed.
| Charger type | Typical power | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Portable charger (single-phase) | ~2.2–7 kW AC | Renters, parking on the go, second home; plug into a suitable socket |
| Home wallbox (single-phase) | 7 kW AC | Most owners — full overnight charge on a standard supply |
| Home wallbox (three-phase) | 11–22 kW AC | Three-phase homes + cars whose onboard charger accepts it verify |
| Public DC fast charger | 50 kW+ Needs active adapter | Long trips only; requires a certified active DC adapter, not every car supports it |
Do I need an adapter for home charging?
Yes. A UAE home wallbox or portable charger gives you a Type 2 plug, but your GB/T car has a GB/T inlet. A passive GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter bridges the two for AC charging. It is rated for AC only (up to 32 A / 22 kW three-phase on the flagship unit) and is the single most useful accessory for a GB/T owner here. Alternatively, a portable charger paired with the adapter gives you a self-contained kit you can use anywhere with a suitable outlet.
A passive plug-shape adapter is AC only. Never use a passive AC adapter to attempt DC fast charging. DC requires an active, certified (CCC/CE/TÜV) adapter and is not supported on every car. GB/T and Type 2 look similar but are not interchangeable — check your inlet before buying.
Home wallbox installation & registration
In the UAE, fixed home wallboxes are generally installed by an approved electrician and registered with your local utility (DEWA in Dubai, or the relevant Abu Dhabi distribution provider). Rules and any incentives vary by emirate and by whether you own a villa or live in an apartment, so confirm the current process with your utility before installation. A portable charger that plugs into an existing socket is the simpler route for renters and apartment dwellers — always have any high-power socket checked by a qualified electrician first.
Match the charger to your circuit. Do not run a 22 kW charger on a circuit not rated for it, and do not assume a wall socket can supply continuous high current. Have the supply assessed by a licensed UAE electrician, and only charge at a rate your car's onboard charger and home wiring both support.
The simplest portable charger + adapter kit
For most grey-import GB/T owners, a portable AC charger plus the GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter is the most flexible setup: it works at home, at a friend's place, or anywhere with a suitable outlet, with no fixed installation. Confirm your car's onboard AC charging rate so you buy a charger you can actually use at full speed.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best portable charger for a Chinese EV in Dubai?
For a grey-import GB/T car, the best everyday option is a portable single-phase AC charger paired with a passive GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter (250 AED). This install-free kit charges overnight at home or anywhere with a suitable outlet. Confirm your car's onboard AC rate so you buy a charger you can use at full speed.
Can I fast-charge my GB/T EV at a UAE public station?
Only with an active, certified DC adapter, and only if your specific car supports it. UAE public DC chargers use CCS2, which is not the same as GB/T. A cheap passive adapter is AC only and must never be used for DC. Most GB/T owners rely on home AC charging instead.
Should I get a 7 kW or 22 kW home charger?
A 7 kW single-phase wallbox suits most owners and fully recharges overnight. Only choose 22 kW if your home has a three-phase supply and your car's onboard charger accepts three-phase AC — many EVs cap onboard AC at 7–11 kW, so a 22 kW unit may not run at full rated speed. Verify your car's limit.
Do I need an adapter to charge a GB/T car at home?
Yes. A UAE home wallbox or portable charger provides a Type 2 plug, while your car has a GB/T inlet. A passive GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter bridges them for AC charging at up to 32 A / 22 kW three-phase. GB/T and Type 2 look alike but are not interchangeable, so check your inlet before buying.
Do I have to register a home EV charger in the UAE?
Fixed home wallboxes are generally installed by an approved electrician and registered with your local utility, such as DEWA in Dubai or the relevant Abu Dhabi provider. Requirements differ by emirate and property type, so confirm the current process with your utility. A plug-in portable charger avoids fixed installation but should still be checked by a licensed electrician.
Is a GB/T inlet the same as Type 2?
No. They look similar but are not interchangeable. GB/T is the China-market AC/DC standard, while UAE public chargers use Type 2 for AC. You need a GB/T-to-Type 2 adapter to charge a GB/T car on UAE AC chargers. Always physically inspect your own car's inlet before buying any adapter or charger.
