Short answer: DEWA Green Charger stations use the Type 2 connector for AC charging and CCS2 (Combo 2) for DC fast charging, with legacy CHAdeMO still on some older units. This Type 2 + CCS2 pairing is the UAE standard across DEWA, Charge AD/ADDC, ADNOC and Tesla.

The UAE runs on two connector standards

Nearly every public charger in the UAE uses one of two plug standards, regardless of network. Knowing these two names tells you almost everything you need before you plug in:

  • Type 2 (Mennekes) — the AC standard. Used for slower destination and home-style charging, typically 7–22kW, and up to 43kW on a few older AC units.
  • CCS2 (Combo 2) — the DC fast-charging standard. It shares the same upper Type 2 pins and adds two large DC pins below, so one socket handles both. Typical UAE DC speeds run 50–150kW and higher on newer sites.

GB/T (used by China-market EVs) and NACS (US Tesla) are not fitted on UAE public chargers. If your car has one of those inlets, you charge through an adapter rather than a different network.

One socket, two jobs. A CCS2 charger can deliver DC fast charging through the full Combo plug, while its upper portion matches a Type 2 AC plug. That is why most UAE EVs need just these two formats.

This table summarises the AC and DC connectors you'll find on each major UAE network. Speeds vary by individual site and are indicative, not guaranteed — always read the on-screen rating at the charger.

What does DEWA Green Charger give you?

DEWA Green Charger is Dubai's flagship public network. Its stations offer Type 2 AC sockets for slower top-ups and CCS2 DC connectors for rapid charging. A number of older DEWA units also retain a CHAdeMO connector — the older Japanese DC standard — which still serves cars such as some early Nissan Leaf models. CHAdeMO is being phased out across the region, so newer DEWA DC points lead with CCS2.

In practice, if you drive a GCC-spec EV with a CCS2 inlet, you plug straight into DEWA's DC connector with no adapter. For overnight or workplace charging you'll use the Type 2 AC socket.

Do I need an adapter for these networks?

For most cars sold officially in the UAE, no. Officially-imported, GCC-dealer EVs — including BYD, Hyundai, Kia and GCC-market Tesla — ship with Type 2 + CCS2 inlets that match every network above natively.

You only need an adapter if your car uses a different inlet standard:

  • GB/T inlet (some grey/parallel China-import EVs — certain BYD models, Chery iCar 03, Jetour, ROX 01, China-spec VW ID.4/ID.6) needs a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC charging.
  • NACS inlet (US grey-import Tesla and Cybertruck) needs a CCS2/Type 2-to-Tesla(US) adapter.

GB/T inlets look superficially similar to Type 2 but are not interchangeable — always physically check your own car's charge port before buying anything.

AC and DC are not the same. A passive, plug-shape adapter is for AC charging only. DC fast charging needs an active, certified (CCC / CE / TÜV) adapter and is not supported on every car. Never treat a passive AC adapter as DC-capable on a CCS2 or Supercharger DC point.

How to use this connector map safely

Three quick steps will keep you on the right side of every UAE network:

  • Identify your inlet. Open your charge-port flap and confirm whether you have Type 2 + CCS2, GB/T or NACS. If unsure, check your owner's manual — never guess from the badge.
  • Match the network. Type 2 + CCS2 cars plug in directly everywhere above. GB/T and NACS cars need the matching adapter and should treat DC carefully.
  • Confirm the rating at the charger. The on-screen kW and connector label are the source of truth for that specific unit; site speeds in this guide are indicative.

Adapters for non-native inlets

If your inlet isn't Type 2 + CCS2, these AC adapters let GB/T and US-Tesla cars use UAE networks.

Frequently asked questions

What connector do DEWA Green Charger stations use?

DEWA Green Charger stations use the Type 2 connector for AC charging and CCS2 (Combo 2) for DC fast charging. Some older DEWA units also keep a legacy CHAdeMO DC connector, but newer DC points lead with CCS2. GB/T and NACS plugs are not fitted to DEWA chargers.

Are Type 2 and CCS2 the same connector?

They are related but not identical. CCS2 (Combo 2) uses the same upper pins as a Type 2 plug, then adds two large DC pins below. A Type 2 plug handles AC only; the full CCS2 plug enables DC fast charging. UAE networks fit both formats so a single socket can serve both needs.

Do Abu Dhabi networks use the same connectors as Dubai?

Yes. Charge AD / ADDC together with TAQA and E2GO use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, the same standards as DEWA in Dubai. ADNOC Distribution forecourt chargers follow the same Type 2 + CCS2 pairing, so a GCC-spec EV charges natively across both emirates.

Can a non-Tesla car use a UAE Tesla Supercharger?

Often yes. UAE Superchargers use CCS2, and many sites are open to non-Tesla CCS2 vehicles via the Tesla app. V2 dual-cable units carry both Type 2 and CCS2 cables. Confirm a specific Supercharger is enabled for non-Tesla charging before relying on it.

What is CHAdeMO and is it still used in the UAE?

CHAdeMO is an older Japanese DC fast-charging standard found on some early EVs such as certain Nissan Leaf models. A few older DEWA units still carry a CHAdeMO connector, but it is being phased out across the region in favour of CCS2. Most newer UAE DC points are CCS2 only.

Do I need an adapter to charge on UAE public networks?

Not if your EV was officially imported through a GCC dealer — those cars use Type 2 + CCS2 and plug in directly everywhere. You only need an adapter if your car has a GB/T inlet (some China grey-imports) or a NACS inlet (US-import Tesla). Always check your own charge port first.
