Charging a China-import VW ID.4 / ID.6 in the UAE

China-built VW ID.4 and ID.6 "Crozz" cars use the GB/T plug, which UAE public chargers do not have. Check your inlet first, then choose the right adapter.

Short answer: It depends on where your VW ID was built. A China-import ID.4 or ID.6 ("Crozz") uses the GB/T plug, which UAE public chargers do not have — so you need a Type 2-to-GB/T adapter for AC charging. A European-spec ID already has Type 2 + CCS2 and needs no adapter.

Which VW ID do you have — China-build or EU-spec?

Volkswagen sells the ID.4 and ID.6 in two very different forms, and they do not share the same charging port. The version you own decides everything that follows, so confirm it before you buy any hardware.

  • China-built ID.4 / ID.6 "Crozz" (made by the SAIC-VW or FAW-VW joint ventures for the Chinese market) uses the GB/T standard for both AC and DC charging.
  • European / GCC-spec ID.4 uses Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC — exactly what UAE public networks provide.

If your ID.4 was officially imported through a GCC dealer, it is almost certainly the Type 2 + CCS2 version and needs no adapter. If it was brought in as a grey/parallel import from China, treat it as GB/T until you have checked the inlet yourself.

The "Crozz" badge is your clue. "ID.4 Crozz" and "ID.6 Crozz" are the China-market names. Seeing "Crozz" on the car, the paperwork, or the import listing is a strong sign it is a GB/T car — but always verify by looking at the charging socket.

How do I check the inlet before I charge?

Open the charging flap and look at the socket on the car. GB/T and Type 2 look broadly similar — both are seven-pin round-ish AC connectors — but they are not interchangeable, and forcing the wrong plug can damage the car or the cable.

  • Type 2 (EU/GCC): the two large power pins sit at the top; for DC there is a separate two-pin section below (that is CCS2).
  • GB/T (China): a similar round AC socket, but the pin layout and locking are different; the DC GB/T port is a larger separate inlet.

If you are not sure which one you are looking at, photograph the socket and compare it against the manufacturer manual, or ask us before buying. This single check prevents almost every charging mistake.

For a GB/T "Crozz" car, AC charging is the simple, reliable path: a passive Type 2-to-GB/T adapter lets you plug into virtually any DEWA Green Charger, mall charger, or Abu Dhabi Type 2 point. DC fast charging is a separate, more demanding question covered below.

AC charging: the everyday solution

On a UAE Type 2 AC charger, a China-build ID.4/ID.6 needs a GB/T to Type 2 adapter. This is a passive plug-shape adapter rated for AC up to 32A / 22kW on three-phase supply — enough for overnight home charging and most public AC posts. It does not change how fast your car charges; it simply bridges the plug shapes safely.

Most owners only ever need this. The vast majority of public charging in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is Type 2 AC. A single GB/T to Type 2 adapter covers DEWA Green Chargers, mall chargers and home wallboxes for a GB/T VW ID.

DC fast charging: read this before you plug in

DC fast charging is not the same as AC. A passive plug-shape adapter is AC only and must never be used on a DC fast charger. To take a CCS2 DC charger into a GB/T car you need an active, certified (CCC / CE / TÜV) CCS2-to-GB/T adapter, and even then it is not supported on every car.

Never treat a passive adapter as DC-capable. DC fast charging pushes far higher voltage and current. Using a passive AC adapter on a DC charger is unsafe. For DC on a GB/T car, only an active certified adapter — confirmed to work with your specific model — should ever be used, and we recommend verifying compatibility before relying on it.

In practice, the safest plan for a China-build ID.4/ID.6 in the UAE is to rely on AC charging via the GB/T to Type 2 adapter and treat DC as a separate decision that depends on your exact car and a certified active adapter.

Will it work on UAE networks?

With the right AC adapter, yes — the GB/T to Type 2 adapter works wherever there is a Type 2 AC socket:

  • DEWA Green Charger (Dubai): Type 2 AC posts are widely available; many sites also have CCS2 DC.
  • Charge AD / ADDC, TAQA & E2GO (Abu Dhabi): Type 2 + CCS2.
  • Malls & hotels: mostly 22kW Type 2 AC, ideal for the passive adapter.
  • ADNOC Distribution and other DC sites: CCS2 DC — only usable with a certified active adapter, after verifying it suits your car.

Frequently asked questions

Can I charge a China-import VW ID.4 at public chargers in Dubai?

Yes, with the right adapter. A China-built ID.4 "Crozz" uses the GB/T plug, which UAE public chargers do not have. Fit a passive GB/T to Type 2 adapter and you can charge on Type 2 AC chargers at DEWA Green Charger sites, malls and hotels across Dubai.

Is my VW ID.4 a GB/T or Type 2 car?

It depends on origin. China-built ID.4 and ID.6 "Crozz" cars use GB/T; European and GCC-spec ID.4 cars use Type 2 + CCS2 and need no adapter. The safest way to know is to open the charging flap and check the inlet, or compare against your car's manual.

What adapter do I need for a China-build VW ID.6 Crozz in the UAE?

For everyday AC charging you need a GB/T to Type 2 adapter — a passive plug-shape adapter rated to 32A / 22kW that lets the GB/T car plug into UAE Type 2 chargers. It is the simplest and most reliable solution for home and public AC charging.

Can I DC fast charge a GB/T VW ID in the UAE?

Only with caution. A passive adapter is AC only and must never be used on a DC charger. DC charging on a GB/T car requires an active, certified (CCC / CE / TÜV) CCS2-to-GB/T adapter, and it is not supported on every car. Verify compatibility for your exact model first.

Why can't I just plug GB/T into a Type 2 socket directly?

Because GB/T and Type 2 look similar but are not interchangeable. The pin layout and locking differ, so the wrong plug will not seat correctly and could damage the car or cable. A proper GB/T to Type 2 adapter bridges the two safely for AC charging.

Does an EU-spec VW ID.4 need any adapter in the UAE?

No. European and GCC-spec ID.4 cars already use Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC, which is exactly what UAE public networks like DEWA, Charge AD and Tesla Superchargers provide. You can plug in directly with no adapter at all.
